This year-long research project shadowed three independent curatorial interventions exploring public space in Johannesburg during 2012, instigated by Goethe-Institut, in my capacity as Research Associate at African Centre for Cities. It resulted in a book, The Art of Public Space (2015). The first, Shoe Shop, was about walking the city. The second, AMAZE.Interact, was about playing the city through immersive media and gaming. The third, Spines, was a dual performance art exploration - United African Utopias, and InHouse Project. This reflection laid the bedrock for what has become my subsequent specialisation in public space, which I have explored both in Johannesburg, Cape Town and further afield on the African continent.
